Hot Cross Buns are a sweet, spiced bun made with currants or raisins and marked with a cross on the top, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. The cross stands as a symbol of the Crucifixion, the rising of the dough – symbolizing the resurrection. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term “hot cross bun” was not until 1733! They are particularly prevalent in England & Ireland.
But they can be enjoyed not just as part of Easter, but all of the spring! Below you will find the recipe, and a video tutorial!
Perhaps you remember the childhood rhyme?
Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
One ha’ penny, two ha’ penny,
Hot cross buns!
If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons
One ha’ penny,
Two ha’ penny,
Hot Cross Buns!
