Not everyone is crazy about instant Oatmeal, but slow cooked Oatmeals aren’t usually practical on busy mornings. Not practical that is – unless you know the mason jar Oatmeal trick!
You can make long cooking Oatmeal, like Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal (my personal favorite) in just one minute – following this tip!
~The Mason Jar Oatmeal Trick~
You will need:
- 4- 8 oz. size Mason Jars
- 1 Cup of your favorite long cooking Oats
- Brown Sugar, Nuts or Dried Fruits (to taste)
Directions:
First, some prep. You will follow the directions on the long cooking oats you chose. In most cases you will add 1 cup of oats, to 4 cups of boiling water. Then you will let that simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. Let mixture cool and make a layer of Oatmeal in the bottom of the mason jars. Add a layer of toppings of your choice. Some suggestions include, brown sugar, fruits or nuts. Next add another layer of oatmeal on top, and follow with a second layer of toppings. If you prefer plain Oatmeal, just fill mason jar 3/4 full of plain oatmeal. Store mason jars in the refrigerator with the tops on!
How to make the Oatmeal in the Morning:
This is the fun part! Your pre-made Oatmeal will stay fresh in the referiderator for up to 5 days! When your ready to have some Oatmeal, take the Mason Jar top off and put it into the microwave.
Microwave for one minute.
Stir, and enjoy right out of the mason jar!

I so need to try this! I have lofty dreams of setting my slow cooker on a Sunday to do the prep and then preparing 2-4 weeks worth but I haven’t found any freeze worthy ones to make I las past the week

This is such a great idea. Perfect for a person living alone. Will try with frozen fruit and maybe top with a little yogurt when I go to eat it. Has always seemed such a hassle for one person, but this suggestions should do the trick and help me have more healthy breakfasts. Thanks for this.
