My husband and I are trying really hard to give our daughter only organic food. And I’ve been making fruit, and veg into baby food for her. So far I’ve steamed and pureed butternut squash, green peas, zucchini, carrots, avocado, apples and now PLUMS!
This puree was the best so far. The plums made the kitchen smell SO lovely as they were cooking. The recipe I used called for the plums to be halved, then pitted. And it said the skins would come off them after steaming. That didn’t really happen- I pretty much had to use a knife to get the skins off- and I took a fair bit of the plums insides with it. I couldn’t include those scraps in the puree for Miss Molly- so I saved it for Michael and I!
I put the whole plum “scraps” in some ramekins, and sprinkled some ground flax seed on top in lieu of granola. It made a healthy snack because the plums were sweet on their own, so there was no added sugar. So just pure fruit, and omega 3 rich flax seed- and yet it tasted like cobbler!
( The plums halved and ready for steaming)
(Lovely, steamed plummy goodness!)
The plum that was free of skins was pureed and frozen in cubes to defrost later for Molly to eat. They turned a really pretty pink color – so that was a nice girly bonus as well:)
(puree ready to be freezed, and my makeshift plum cobbler)
I was really pleased, no wasting the plum skins meant I got a week of meals for Molly, and a lovely healthy “dessert” for Michael and I!
I love the plumskin cobbler with flaxseed!! That’s a great idea! And the plum puree is a particularly pretty shade of pink 🙂 It’s so great that you’re doing this for Molly! You are saving her from being a processed food/preservative/sugar addict (like sooooo many of us are – and I believe that it starts very young). Great job Shan! 🙂 Love you!
Thanks Laura! Michael has been reading lots of information on how bad that stuff is for our bodies- never mind a tiny body! Of course it’s much harder to cut the bad stuff out once you have the taste for it;)
I have a much easier time limiting Molly’s intake of sugar and the like- than I do my own!!
