If you’re a parent, you already know that children grow up too fast! And anyway that you can capture each sweet age and moment in time, is worth it’s weight in gold. That’s why I love the idea of asking your child a series of 20 birthday questions each year, so you can look back in the years to come, and remember who they were then!
You can record your child’s answers in a baby book, a video, or both each year! Whatever works for them and you!
Below is the list of the 20 questions I use. But you can change or alter them to better fit your family. These are just a jumping off point! And for fun – you will also find a video of these same questions, as I ask my daughter for her answers to them this year!
20 Birthday Questions:
1. What is your favorite color?
2. What is your favorite toy?
3. What is your favorite fruit?
4. What is your favorite TV show?
5. What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?
6. What is your favorite outfit?
7. What is your favorite game?
8. What is your favorite snack?
9. What is your favorite animal?
10. What is your favorite song?
11. What is your favorite book?
12. Who is your best friend?
13. What is your favorite cereal?
14. What is your favorite thing to do outside?
15. What is your favorite drink?
16. What is your favorite holiday?
17. What do you like to take to bed with you at night?
18. What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
19. What do you want for dinner on your birthday?
20. What would you wish for if you were granted any 3 wishes?
Bonus Question: What do you want to be when you grow up?
My daughter is 4, and just about to turn 5! Here is her 20 question video from this year….

This is such a cool idea, and she is a doll! I will pass this on to my cousin, who has small children.
@carla bonesteel, Thanks Carla! We think we’ll probably keep her;)
yes- def send it on to your cousin, I wish I had known about it sooner:)
I LOOOOOOVVVVEEE her SO much! She is so smart and so funny – and has a beautiful little voice, too! 🙂 My favorite is when she addresses the children 🙂
This is such a fantastic idea! I would have so done this had I thought about it when my boys were younger! I have saved just about everything else childhood related!
This is a wonderful idea! And you’re right, they do grow up too fast!
I think this is a really neat idea!! I am going to do this…of course when my little one can talk. It would be a great graduation present.
Awesome idea – and great to do this on video as a “forever keepsake.” I’ll have to start doing this with my nieces, nephews and grandkids!
How cute she is! And what a wonderful idea, to record this every year! Look back on this each year and see the differences (and the similarities!) I love it! (Molly’s a keeper!)
This is such a creative way to memorialize an important moment in time. It also makes the child feel very important, being interviewed by an adult, like an adult. I love this! I want to use this when my children turn 9 and 10 this year. It’s harder to think of things to do at these ages, and this is such a great activity to involve older children in celebrating birthdays. Thanks!
Love love love this!! I would love to be able to read somewhere my own answers to these questions!!
This is such a cute idea! I will have to do it when my son gets older.
this is such a cute idea! it’s a nice way to see how they grow and change each year in a fun way…will also be funny to show them once they’re in high school 🙂
This is such a clever idea! I wish I could have dome something like it with my kids. The video was precious! Your Daughter is amazing and so articulate for her age! I really love the way you made it seem like an interview. She will certainly have some memories of sitting in her little chair and talking with her Mommy! And you can have some great fun when her Boyfriend becomes her Fiance’! Loved the interview. Thanks for sharing and thank you for the chance to wing the contest.
I wish I would have thought of this sooner, but I feel blessed that I’ve been able to share so many wonderful memories with my kiddos so far. I will definitely be adding this to our birthday parties! Thank you.
We did something similar last year with my four year old and I cannot forget to keep doing it! I love this idea!
what a cute idea! love it!
What a great idea! It would be fun to see how children’s answers change each year.
These are great! My son is about to turn 5, so I’ll have to remember these!
Shannon, I love this! What a great interview gal she is!
she is precious…
