I remember being 8 months pregnant – traipsing all over town for one of the last remaining items on my baby registry. I was OBSESSED. I needed it. And I needed it before the baby was born!
For some reason, I’d gotten it into my head that the baby would be safer when we finally put her in her little car seat, and left the hospital for the first time – if I had a yellow sign on my back window. You know the signs right?
Baby on Board!
That once tiny baby girl just turned 6! And in the last few years, I’ve realized two truths about that “Baby on Board” sign.
Truths About the “Baby on Board” Signs:
1. Even when the baby grows into a toddler, little kid, and then big kid – you want to protect them just as much as that first day you brought them home from the hospital! In fact – every person on the road is still someone’s baby!
2. Second truth – those signs work! Seeing that baby on Board sign instantly reminds drivers to consider the precious lives in the cars around them! When I had that sign on our car it was noticeable how thoughtful drivers around me were as soon as they noticed it! Someone might have a moment of road rage, honking their horn – then notice my sign and give me a friendly wave as if to say sorry. It just took an extra moment of awareness!
What if we all had that awareness -not just with cars with a “Baby on Board” sign, but EVERYONE?
Guess what?! September 3rd we are doing just that with Drive Safe Today Day! It will be a day to make small changes to your drive to make it safer for you and everyone around you!
How can you Participate?
Sign the Drive Safe Today Day pledge and spend September 3rd – driving a little more safely and a little more kindly! Just think how many accidents will we prevent! How many morning commutes might end in a smile instead of stress?
I’ve teamed up with Progressive for their Drive Safe Today initiative. Although I’ve been compensated for my post, the thoughts and ideas are my own.

I never got one of those signs with my kids, but a I do take notice of them. I rarely drive anymore, but we will be participating by showing down.
@Megan @mnmspecial, Slowing down is a GREAT way to participate!
Yes, every parent needs one of these signs in the car.
@Raijean, And even more important than the sign – the attitude behind it! 🙂
Another thing about the baby on board sign and not the nicest thought but if there is a serious accident and baby seat gets thrown from car rescue service will see sign and know to look for baby.
@Ann Gorman, True Ann. And hopefully after 9-3 everyone can keep their extra kind and safe driving habits – and maybe we can avoid some accidents too! Sending hugs to you and your wee one!!
Love the pledge. Wish some folks around here would take it! Everywhere I look they’re talking away on the phone.
I never had one of the signs either, but I do wish I could wrap my car in bubble wrap to protect my kids a little more while driving. If the yellow signs have the same effect, I’m all for them!
I think if the signs help even in the smallest bit then they are working!
I do take notice of these signs. It’s a good reminder that there is precious cargo on the roads.
I just can’t believe what horrible drivers people are. We travel I-95 between Wilmington, DE and Richmond, VA pretty often. During our last trip, we were almost run off the road at least 10 times. Thanks for challenging people to be aware of those around them when they are driving.
I never had one of those signs, but my vehicle does sport a Student Driver sign and for the most part, I think it does help.
I never had one of those signs but I drive so much differently now that I have kids in the car. I (almost) never speed! 🙂
I’m happy to say that I had this sign with both children. 🙂
I love those signs as well. People are a lot more cautious when they see them posted.
I will proudly admit that I am a very conscious driver. I know that each and every car contains precious life, whether they are 2 weeks old or 100 years old. I do not text and drive, and I take my time! Life is worth it!
I agree that those signs make people drive better around you. Pledging.
I never really thought of that sign as a safety measure, but I guess it really is.
I didn’t do those signs, but now that our oldest just got her permit, I’ve been thinking a LOT more about road safety.
People drive way too fast and way too distracted lately, this is a much needed promotion. I never had one of those signs though because my windows were tinted – they came that way.
We never had a Baby-On-Board sign but LA drivers should be much more considerate and we should not need signs for that. I love a campaign that raises awareness, though. We all could use the reminder 🙂
I bought one of those signs when my kids were young, not sure what happened to it but this post makes me want to head out and get another one.
I’ve never had one either but do notice them as I drive.
I never really liked the idea of the signs. I always felt like people should be careful around cars in general. If I’m going to get in an accident: It’s not like I am going to choose to pick a car without the sign.. Ideally I wouldn’t be getting in an accident anyway!
I never really though of that with road rage, I suppose – Minnesota Nice – It applies to driving as well.
