It’s officially the Christmas season and what better way to get that holiday spirit, then to go see “The Nutcracker” preformed by The Texas Ballet Theater?
My husband and I took our daughter Molly on black Friday. It seemed a cheerier bet then going to stores at 6am to shop – those ladies in line can be brutal!! Instead we opted for something more peaceful – we went to the ballet!
First off- the newly opened Winspear Opera House in Dallas is DIVINE! Stunning, sleek – and state of the art. And The Texas Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” was truly revelatory for me. I love the arts , but ballet has never been my thing. Shakespeare – yes! Musicals – yes! Tutus … not really. This production changed that for me. It was a beautiful, but also celebratory production! In fact, the climax of the opening act includes a Christmas tree that grows to 40 feet tall, and a snowfall on stage!
My 15 month old daughter was mesmerized. And while she is still a bit young for this, she applauded the dancers, and waved to all the children dancing on stage. It was precious, and I can’t wait to see how much more she will enjoy it when she is 6 or 7!
Fun Texas Ballet Nutcracker Facts:
– Did you know over 200 costumes are used in the ballet?
– 10 miles of thread were used to build the costumes!
– 17 loads of laundry have to be done after every performance!
– Some women go through one pair of pointe shoes for each performance!
(Did I mention my pumpkin developed a small crush, on a lobby nutcracker just her size? Who knew she would go for the strong, silent type? Lol.)
I really recommend this production of the Nutcracker, it’s child friendly and would be a memorable family tradition to start! And if you are on the other side of DFW, you are in luck too! The Texas ballet is taking this production to The Fort Worth Bass Performance Hall, starting December 11th.
Whether you see it in Dallas or in Fort Worth, you are in for a real holiday treat! My husband and I both left with smiles on our faces, and in the Christmas mood. And when our daughter fell asleep in the car on the way home – we smiled knowing she was surely dreaming of Snow Queens, and Sugar plum fairies!

When I saw the title to this blog entry, I thought it was going to be about A Chorus Line. Haha!
I have never seen The Nutcracker live. I would love to one day, it sounds like a wonderful experience.
Haha! The title is a refrence to "A Chorus line!" My husband and I kept humming that song on our way to the Nutcracker – so I had to use it in the blog! Good catch!! 🙂
awww Shan! That is so cool that you guys took her to the Nutcracker:) She looks so grown up in her little theatre seat, and I love the one of her looking at the nutcracker, that is so funny! she's probably like introducing herself to him:) The theatre seats look so plush!! I saw the Nutcracker once with Stef and my aunt when we were younger, I would love to see it again! so christmasy!!!!! love ya:)
The theatre seats WERE plush! It was a beautiful new theatre in Dallas, and the whole thing was super sleek and modern. They even had a modern chandelier that receeded into the ceiling at the start of the show, and three levels of balconies:)
I took one of my sons to see The Lion King for his birthday a few years ago – it was amazing and he loved it. My oldest son grew up listening to Les Miz and got to see it in the Queens Theatre in London on a Layover on a mission trip to Uguanda (everytime it came near us, it was a due date for one of his brothers). This month I'm taking my 14 year old to see A Christmas Carol at the big theatre in town.
It sounds like you had such a special time! I love outings like that!
WOW to the Did you knows? That's crazy! I didn't know that much went into it. LOVE the pics! I love going to those types of things with my daughter 🙂 She's only too but she loves it.
Stopping in from SITS 🙂
Stopping by for SITS. So glad I found your blog! You've got tons of great stuff!
That picture of your daughter with the nutcracker is adorable. I went to the play with my father as a young girl and watched it every year on video we couldn't go. Now that I'm older I go with my girlfriends. It's just as much a tradition as a Christmas tree.
I'm lol'ing…your daughter going for the "strong, silent type"…LOL.
My sister is going to see the Nutcracker next weekend in OHIO…she's never been so I think it'll be wonderful for her. I love the sugar plum fairies…I love ballet:)
P.S. your little one is freaking adorable!!!
I think I'm going to see this in NY.
I've been dying to go to a ballet show in The Big Apple.
Your daughter is super cute (I love that little dress&bow, and those pink cheeks 🙂 )
You are a brave woman for sure to take a 15 month old to the ballet. My hat is off to you!!! I don't even like to take my kids to Target for fear of what they'll get into. 😉 The Nutcracker is my fave…started dancing in it when I was in elementary school. 🙂 Happy SITS Day!
That is so amazing that your daughter was able to sit and enjoy the performance. What a wonderful experience for you all.
I am so excited its Chrsitmas. I can't wait for next year, Anthony is only 6 months old, next year he will be older and understand and it enjoy it more.
Aww, what a lovely post!
I am going to see the Nutcracker with my daughter on Moday and I can't wait. She went to see it a few years ago with her class and I couldn't make it that day. She talks about wanting to see it every Christmas ever since so I am really excited to go with her.
Thank you so much for sharing, I'm glad it's your SITS day and I found your blog.
How sweet!!
My sister and I started a tradition last year of taking my daughter to the Nutcracker. She LOVED it! We go again on Saturday and I can't wait. One of the really fun parts of having girls! 🙂
How adorable your daughter is! (And you are so pretty!) You are making fabulous memories for her! I hope you take her every year. It was a tradition for me growing up and when I was on of the sugar plum fairies I was so excited!!
My new grandchild, a girl, will be 6 months old this month (she was born on OUR wedding anniversary!) They are in Austin but I so hope we can do fun things like this as well…..thanks for the photos of the experience….
It's been far too long since I've been to The Nutcracker (or any performance of anything for that matter). I saw it with my Grandmother in Toronto when I was around 7 I think and have been meaning to go back. It does something to my heart when I see it on TV or hear the music. Probably the ex-ballerina in me 🙂
I think I might have linked the wrong blog to you? I do run the Paper Cuts book club blog—and no—we are in Maryland–not texas—but you could still read along virtually!
There are lots of online groups.
Anyhooooo—see, I have diarhhea of the mouth, too! My momma blog is:

If I wasnt such a moron and could figure how to put "pages" and buttons on my blog to streamline everything to one blog, I would not have this problem…but I am…so there's that.
See ya tomorrow!
haha, great post and blog! Love your layout and chit chat! very cute pic of your bub standing next to the nutcracker – love it! "tall dark handsome" type too I think.. and I'm following too now to see what else you guys get up to there in the US!
Sits
HAPPY SITS Day!! I decided to comment on this post instead of the one that you will get tons of comments on today!
This is a fabulous post. Though I am not able to see the texas version, I am going to the Calgary version of the Nutcracker. I saw it as a kid and has made me really excited to see it as an adult. Plus I am taking my boyfriend who's never seen it.
This post makes me super excited about going to the show.
Oh – how fun! And you are brave! My daughter is 4 and I can't wait to take her to a "real" show!
