I recently read a post by Kimba over at “A soft place to land.” She talked about how she sometimes struggles with keeping her focus on her family and those she loves, when she gets caught up in technology. And I can relate to much of what she says. It’s so tempting to check out how everyone is on facebook, to see who is twittering, or posting on myspace.
So I’m taking the “unplug” challenge, along with Kimba and many of her readers. You can do it too! Friday, March 27th is Unplug Friday! You can can “unplug” from as much, or as little as you want on THIS FRIDAY. Then if you want, you can blog about your experience on Monday. You can “unplug” from a computer, or television, or your cell phone- whatever.
I think for me the challenge is going to be to abstain from all things computer related, ALL day! No checking e-mail, no Internet surfing, no reading facebook or myspace! Nada. Zilch. I’m pretty sure being cut off from the computer is going to drive me insane! But I think it will be a good way to hit the reset button on my priorities. And with my extra time I plan to spring clean, and get done a few odds and ends I’ve been putting off. Perhaps I’ll finally clean out the fridge???
If anyone else is participating in this challenge I’d love to know what you plan to do, and how it goes! Click the button below to learn more!
that sounds great and interesting!! you have to post what your thoughts were afterwards about it:) i can’t unplug totally cause i have work email but i can unplug myspace and facebook and blogspot…that will be sooooo hard to even do that!! lol you should put a note on your computer to remind your self “do not go on!” you’d probably get so much accomplished without the computer…it’ll be like the matrix lol unplugged!
Thanks for posting on this! Nothing computer related for me on Friday. It might be the single most productive day I’ve ever had!

Nikki- I am going to post about my experience “unplugging” on Monday. I’m hoping that I get lots done on Friday, but also that I get some time to reflect on how I want to use technology in my life. You can just check work e-mail…but skip checking other stuff if you want to do it too:)
Kimba- Thanks for the great idea! I too may mysteriously get a lot more done on Friday 🙂
Unplug? You mean you can unplug this thing? 😉
This is a great — and very convicting — idea. I know deep down that I spend a lot more time on the computer than I need to, and it’s just too easy to sit down to “check my e-mail” and end up wasting an hour. I think I’m going to do it too!
Thanks for sharing the challenge Shannon!
For a mom who works in the home this must be especially hard. I have to imagine with an 8 month old as your only source of conversation you may be a bit starved for adult interaction.
I’ll be very interested to hear how your experiment goes, Shannon. Honestly I think we all could stand to slow down a bit, and this may well be a good way top do it. Good luck!

p.s. I had to sign in using IE to get it to take my comment. Blogger may not like Firefox?
I don’t do tv at my house, so I could totally unplug that… LOL But the computer would be tough since I’m on computers at work. Like right now 🙂
Thanks for asking if you can add me into your blogroll… sure!
It’s really good to meet you.
Wendy- I too frequently forget that the computer has an “off” switch..lol. I look forward to hearing how your day without technology went too!
American Homemaker- Yes, the computer needed at work does pose a challenge! PS. Thanks for the go ahead:)
