I am soon to be entering the rite of pasage called “potty training.” Do you have any tips, or tricks? Which potty is best? WHat is the best way to potty train? I’d love to know your thoughts!

Awwww Shan I love your vlog!!! So cool!!!! And its like seeing you and talking with you for real!! So all we need is a little glass of vino hehe:) I don't have babies and I don't know much about potty training but I totally think she should have her own little potty!! That will be adorable:) I think I've heard stories about kids having their own pottys somewhere before, so its probably possible. Good Luck with miss Mollys potty training!!! Love you and miss you so much!!! 🙂
Cute Vlog..:) Silas it 21/2 and totally potty trained…how we did it (with a boy even)….little potty chair, cheap and easy to clean, and a little one for the big potty when he got bigger. I was a nursery director for YEARS and saw many a mom pull her hair out over this. We talked about it but never pushed at ALL. One day he came running in "I have to go potty" and the rest is history! We did a potty toy jar that he picked the toys out for, for #2 though!Happy training, each child is so different, good times!
Hey Nicole-
Yes, I should record vlogs that are just me yammering on, and you could record ones for me…and we could enjoy wine and whinning virtually!! Yay, that be fun!! lol. Love ya too girlfriend!
JMS- That DOES help! I'm just trying to figure out the basic timing and supplies! So you started on a potty chair, and then moved on to the adaptor seat? I was thinking of it as either or- so it helps to think about the seats as proggressive…thanks so much!
Hi Shan! I love your vlog, too!! 🙂 It's so nice to be able to actually see you and hear you! YAY!!
For potty training, I'm not a mom, but I've heard about moms who will start the training process by getting the baby her own little toilet seat. What's nice about the portable seat is that you can put it anywhere – she could be introduced to the potty by sitting in front of her favorite TV program and going in her own little chair instead of her diaper. Then she could see that she can go potty on her own and the chair can eventually move into the bathroom and then move onto the big kid potty 🙂
And there seems to be something about pooping outside of a diaper that's particularly scary to kids. My nephew Dylan has no trouble peeing in the potty but will ask for a diaper so he can poo. He REALLY doesn't want to poo in the potty. Then there's my niece Sophie who, at around 20 months, decided she didn't like diapers and would take them off and go potty wherever she happened to be at the moment….and not near the diaper. Last I heard, she's in full on potty training mode now LOL…and she doesn't turn 2 for another couple of months.
That's all I know about that 🙂 Love you!
Thank you for stopping by my blog. Yea! You are definitely entered in the drawing. Remember if you post about it in your blog you get entered two more times too! 🙂
Laura-
That's all really helpful! My nightmare scenario is a Sophie! I don't think I would be able to disenfect the house thuroughly enough if that kept happening! I would have to replace the carpet – otherwise I would just be envisioning bacteria allover it!! Hey, come to think of it…maybe I could convince Michael we needed hardwood floors;)
Hi, Shannon. Great first foray into vlogging. I don't think I could speak that coherently for a couple of minutes straight. Def would need a video editor to crop out the ers and uhms and other gaffes. I'm sure the local morning show will try to hire you as soon as they see this. Super cute. It's nice to have this captured for posterity. Be sure to save these clips for Molly, so she can see Mommy when she's older. And can be embarrassed by your pubic inquiries about her toilet training. 😉
Love your first vlog….!!! I've heard the sesame street potty video is great…I'm in your boat..son is still too young to begin the process but haven't heard a lot of good advice yet….good luck and happy SITS day!
I got two cheap ones (the kind that sing) and wish I had started with the Ikea bowl type – Why? its small and solid, you can stick the whole thing into the dishwasher – a very nice feature! I got two as I stick one in the car. It sounds nasty, but is so much better than lugging my kids into a public restroom!
In addition to a potty chair (which is nice if you are starting young – I potty trained both of my older kids before 18m) you'll want a toilet seat reducer so when they are big enough to climb onto the toilets by themselves, they are less likely to fall in.
Good luck! Love your vlog!
Love the vlog!
As far as potty training both my girls were completely different. Brianna was 3 before she got it, Katie was 2.
I got the potty seat you put on the ground, then they used the insert on the big toilet until they were big enough and confident enough not to fall in.
I'm scared this time around, what am I supposed to do with a boy!
Good luck 🙂
Shannon,
Excellent vlogg! It was quite enjoyable to watch you live on line and can honestly say I look forward to more of these from you.
As for the potty training issue: as you know, it's been many moons since I had to deal with this issue via my own children. But my daughter did live with me during the potty training days for Kristen.
I don't need to tell you that there are many options for dealing with this momentous milestone of precious Molly's life; sometimes it can be easier to not over think it but instead let your little one decide what she's comfortable with.
Some little ones want to "be like Mommie" so they don't even want to use the training seats while others want a seat all to themselves (which leaves you with the joys of cleaning out the seat).
In Kristen's case, it was the afore mentioned "I wanna be like mommie", so we used the seat that attached to the comode. But she really did better on her own without the attachment. We knew she was independent and she certainly exhibited that in her potty training. We also did not pressure her, even though she seemed like she was going through this milestone later than some, we allowed her to go through it at her pace.
The best advise however, is something you certainly don't need advise on — PRAISE! Little ones get so excited when they are praised for all those good things they do and it stands to reason that they will pick up on the potty training quicker with the added encouragement.

Try the towel potty training method.
