HBO recently gave SXSW attendees a look at both the past and future of the show “Game of Thrones” -which comes back to TV on April 6, 2014 for it’s 4th season. Game of Thrones – The Exhibition has a multitude of costumes and props from the show that fans will instantly recognize, as well as a chance to try out a cutting edge virtual experience from Occulus Rift.
Occulus Rift -the virtual reality headset used for 3-D gaming, gives you a 360 degree experience of the great ice wall of Knights watch! I got a a chance to try it – and it was awesome!
Show Costumes & Props clockwise: Melisandre the red priestess dress, Stannis Baratheon’s armor. The crowns from Joffrey and Margaery’s wedding crowns, Olenna Tyrell’s head covering, Jaime Lannisters golden hand, and the “Hand of the King” pin. Skull, Dragonglass daggers found beyond the wall, skull cup, dragonglass hammers used by wildlings.
The Austin Music Hall hosted the exhibition, and was transformed into a dark and spooky virtual Westeros – the fictional land where Game of Thrones takes place. Fans enter the exhibit through super atmospheric lighting, and black curtains before perusing costumes worn by a wide array of characters including Bran Stark, Jaime Lannister, Hodor, Arya, the Hound, Daenerys Targaryen & many more.
From Top to Bottom: Ygritte & Jon Snow’s costumes, Stansa’s wedding dress, Oberyn Martell tunic, Margaery Tyrell dress, and Jaime Lannister’s tunic. Snow’s Trumpet that Theon Greyjoy uses, Stannis Baratheon’s map pieces, Shireen Baratheon’s twig doll & shell collection, Shireen’ book she taught Davos Seaworth to read on.
The Virtual Reality Experience: “Ascend the Wall” is an experience that lasts roughly 90 seconds and places you virtually in the cold & icy world of Westeros. Visitors climb into the shell of a wooden elevator and put on Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and a pair of headphones. Immediately you can look up and around – 360 degrees. Anywhere you look, wind whips and an icy mountain whizzes by you as you ascend the 700 foot wall. Eventually Wildlings and other aggressors come at you from below. Totally thrilling and worth the hour of waiting in line!
