What does “Avatar” have in common with kids TV?!?

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my full disclosure statement for details.

February 11, 2010 Shannon Schmid 66 Comments

My 18 month old daughter isn’t a huge fan of TV. She enjoys it now and again, but there are very few programs we go out of our way to watch, and I like it that way.

One exception to that though, is a program on PBS – “Sid the Science Kid.”

It’s a very sweet program that introduces very simple science concepts to preschoolers. It also involves a lot of Muppet like creatures dancing. I think that is what hooked my pumpkin! They do a little dance when “Sid” gets dropped off at preschool everyday – and it totally sticks in my brain all day long. Wanna infect yourself???

The neat thing about this show is that it’s made in a way very similar to the movie “Avatar.” There are actually pupateers that dance the routines, and create the characters movements. Those movements are captured in a digital computer format- and cleaned up. I just watched a short video about it – and it’s fascinating!

It really made me appreciate what looks like a simple, but engaging kids progam so much more! Did I mention this show comes from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and is actually headed up by Jim Henson’s son?!

The Muppets have gone high tech people!! If you’re interested in seeing how they do it, check out the video below!

What other kids programs do you all watch and recommend?
