Watkins Glen has so much to do, not the least of which is enjoyment of Seneca lake, the largest and deepest of all the Finger Lakes. When our family mentioned to others that we were planning a road trip across Upstate New York, several people we knew told us we simply must look into Seneca Harbor Station Cruises.
We soon found out there are Cruise themes and types to fit every budget at Seneca Harbor Cruises. We ultimately went, with a Cruise on Captain Bill’s Vintage Motor Vessel – The Stroller IV!
The Stroller IV, was first christened in 1934 and it still retains the glamour and retro charm of that era. And after picking up our tickets, we were escorted down into the hull of the Stroller. The boat’s wooden interior is beautiful and cozy, and lends an intimate feel to your cruise. The Stroller IV Cruise is ideal for learning a little bit of history, while also enjoying a very leisurely paced Cruise across Seneca Lake.
Glass windows surround all the boat’s seats, and every bench seems to boast the most beautiful views you are likely to see on your trip through The Finger Lakes Region. On our sailing we saw beautiful sailboats, seagulls, jumping fish, peaceful waves sharing the water with us.
One of the highlights of our tour was seeing the painted rocks located at the southern end of the lake, depicting an American flag, Tee-pee, and several Native Americans. The older paintings, located on the bottom of the cliff, are said to have been drawn in 1779 after the Senecas Tribe escaped men from the John Sullivan campaign. We also enjoyed getting a closer look at the Seneca Lake Salt Industry.
The Tour has lot’s of information for those in your group who want to learn more about the area. But there is also plenty of peaceful time, where your party can just enjoy the lapping of the water on the wood of the ship.
We were so glad to have chosen to end our day in Watkins Glen with a Cruise on Captian Bill’s Stroller IV! It was peaceful and beautiful, and our whole family left the boat in a great mood. A very family friendly, worthwhile trip for those who want to actually get out on one of Americas most gorgeous lakes!
