Today’s post is brought to you by a Girl Scout, Guest Contributor!
As a Girl Scout, I am working on earning my Bronze Award Take Action Project. I’ve been spending time learning about the needs of my community – and one such need, is the lack of bees. That is why I want to show you how to make a tin can mason bee house, and why you should!
We NEED bees!
Why? Bees pollinate almost 1/3 of our food supply as humans. In fact, without them a lot of the food we most enjoy would not be possible. Foods like apples, coffee, oranges, tomatoes, and many other foods are bee dependent.
One way you can help is to make local bees a place where they can thrive. An easy group of bees to attract is mason bees. Mason bees are gentle and rarely sting. They are also great pollinators. Honey bees are great, but we can take some of the stress off this type of bee by attracting and providing homes for mason bees.
How to Make a Mason Bee House:
- You will need a pvc pipe, or a cup, or even a tin can to use as your bees housing!
- A bunch of straws of different sizes, or even rolled paper!
- Paint is optional!
This Video will show you what to do!
As you can see, it is important to support your local bees!
