DIY Luna Lovegood Costume – for Cheap!

Luna Lovegood! How can anyone not want to be her? Smart, intuitive, open, and honest! She is one of our family’s favorite characters in any book or movie. So when my daughter asked if we could make her a Luna Lovegood costume to dress up in, I knew we had to do it! Who wouldn’t want to support their kids bid to feel like such an incredible heroine? But where to start? It turned out that for us, the easiest way to assemble the Luna Lovegood Costume was to upcycle a few pieces from Goodwill and Ebay! And for those parts of the costume we couldn’t find second hand – there is always Amazon to the rescue! Don’t worry, I’ll give you all the links you need below…

Here is how we put together our Luna Lovegood Costume on a budget!

Luna Lovegood Costume – on the Cheap:

Luna’s Skirt–  We bought this Luna Lovegood skirt directly from “What Looking” and it was a bargain compared to other skirt prices I saw. This one was $26.99. It does ship from China, and I was nervous it would never arrive, or that it would take forever! Honestly, I’d never heard of this site, so buying from them felt like a real leap of faith. But, it just took over a week to arrive – and was great. You might want to note the material is silky chiffon and has a slight sheen, rather than a matte cotton look. But I think it works great! My daughter is in the xs and it fits perfectly, so I would say if your unsure on size, this is an item to size up on.

That said – if you can sew, and you prefer to make your own Luna Lovegood skirt – do it! You can get Luna inspired fabric here.

Blue Tights – We got the tights in the color sapphire. And although they are one size fits all, there is a lot of stretch, and I think they would work for most grown ups and kids alike.

They came within a day of ordering them (thanks Amazon Prime) – and the color is perfectly vibrant! These cost $12.99 on amazon.

Striped Socks – You probably already have striped socks in a drawer somewhere, but if not we found these socks for $8.99. I dunked the tops in dye while I was dying the Luna bag at the same time, just to get them closer to the Luna look.

Womens Chuck Shoes – My daughter had a pair of maroon chucks already so we just used those. However, floral chucks just like the ones Luna Lovegood wears in the movie, do sometimes turn up on ebay and Amazon. So it’s always worth a look, if you dont already have shoes you want to use!

Pink Jacket – This jacket was found on ebay, and was a tapestry material, in an off white cream color. Looking on ebay is a great way to find the perfect size jacket for you, at a super cheap price! We got this Old Navy Jacket for just $7.79 – and then we dyed it with “Super Pink” Rit Dye.

I love how it turned out, and this pink is made especially for “hard to dye” fabrics. I especially recommend this dye if you have a jacket that is polyester or a blend – the dye does great holding onto tough fabrics!

Luna Lovegood Glasses – You can buy these glasses all over, but we got ours from Amazon. They came within a day, and for $13.95, we found them a good deal and the perfect Luna Lovegood costume accessory!

Quibbler – We printed out the pages of the Quibbler from templates we found here. They are free, although you do have to sign into the Muggle Magic instructable site to download them. You can also find lots of other Quibbler inspired covers all over the web for free!

Bag – We found this oatmeal colored “Sak” bag at our local Goodwill for $2.00! It took the blue dye we used very strongly – and in retrospect I wish I had used less dye to start ( it’s a tiny bit darker than I’d like).

We used All purpose Rit Dye in the shade Navy Blue.

Bonus: The Wig – I love this costume with or without the wig – but we happened to have one for another costume already that works so perfectly, I had to tell you where we got it! This wig is available on Amazon for only $21.99 – and we got it in the shade “blonde.” I wasn’t sure what to expect from a cheap wig, but this one is really beautiful and is very full. The bangs are easy to brush to the side as Luna Lovegood, and I think it completes the look perfectly!

Don’t want to assemble all the parts of the Luna Lovegood Costume yourself? You can always buy the costume outright on Halloween costume sites or on Amazon.

However you choose to portray Luna – I hope it’s a magical!

I avoided it at first because it didn’t seem that fun. Then- because I didn’t know how to do it. But, this year I’m challenging myself to try new things. Even if I look like an idiot! Who cares?! 😃

Bottom line, loved bowling. I suck. But it’s fun! Who knew? Well, lots of people. But now me too! Also- it’s helpful to have friends that make you try new things and expand your horizons. Super grateful for mine! ❤️
